In 1982 a nucleus for community theater was formed in the resort town of Ocho Rios , Jamaica , several years later the concept was adopted by Caribbean theater talents in the United States and this became the birth of
ISLAND THEATER PRODUCTIONS ,Inc.
In 1984 the company joined with Ralph Holness Productions and produced a drama titled " SCANDAL" . The play opened in Ocho Rios and later re-opened at the Palladium Theater in Montego Bay , toured rural Jamaica before a more than overwhelming opening at the Ward Theater in Kingston , where it continued it successful run , playing six sold out performances weekly , for two years , stopping only to allow the national pantomime to do it's annual run . The play made headline in the national paper .
"SCANDAL" went on to break every box office record set by every show in the Caribbean .
This propelled playwright and actor Michael Denton to the forefront of theater business and made him one of the most successful and sought after playwright . His productions has contributed greatly to the growth of our company and more so to Jamaican theater .
Noted talents in the likes of OLIVER SAMUELS , AUDREY REID , DIONE SILVERA and VOLIER JOHNSON and noted playwrights such as BASIL DAWKINS , LOUIS MARRIOTT , GINGER KNIGHT and HUGH KING has all worked along side Michael Denton in one capacity or another , as Island theater / Michael Denton hosted works or presentations with or by these theatrical practioners .
